Spencer Gifts

Spencer Gifts LLC, also known as Spencer’s, is an American retail company and mall retailer founded in 1947. The company currently owns and operates a well-known pop-up seasonal Halloween costume store, known as Spirit Halloween, which they purchased in 1999 from Joseph Marver.

History

Spencer Gifts was founded on June 19th, 1947 in Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey by Max Spencer Adler. Spencer Gifts started out as a novelty mail-order catalog and it wouldn’t be until 1963 that the first physical store opened in the Cherry Hill Mall located in Cherry Hill, NJ which still operates today. In 1990 the mail-order catalog division was discontinued with the company choosing to focus more on the physical stores. In 2003 the company changed its storefront name from “Spencer Gifts” to simply “Spencer’s” as part of a new leadership rebranding. In 1997 the company expanded its stores to Canada, following with the United Kingdom in 2000.

In the 1990’s, Spencer Gifts had their own separate Halloween store prior to their purchase of Spirit Halloween.
In 2018 Spencer’s tested out a Christmas store concept similar to Spirit Christmas called “Spencer’s Workshop”. The store featured an artificial fireplace with a seating area and a selection of holiday gifts including numerous ugly sweaters, gag gifts, inflatables, and small animatronics.
